Description

North Lodge to Hilston House is a 20th-century building in a neo-Georgian style, designed on a Greek cross plan with a central chimney stack. The lodge is two storeys high and constructed of stucco with a hipped slate roof. Each of the four wings of the facade has four prominent pilasters arranged in a tetrastyle pattern, framing a pair of 12-pane sash windows on each floor, with a rectangular panel between the floors. The north elevation, facing the road, has lean-to extensions that extend the full height of the wings, all beneath carried-down roofs. Corner pilasters form an interrupted pedimental form. The lean-to extension to the left (closest to the drive) features a round-headed blank arch with imposts and keystone, containing a square-headed doorway. The other extension has a keyed lunette. Attached at right angles to the pilaster on this side is a high screen wall, pierced at its inner end by an archway and connected at its outer end to a pier that mirrors those of the entrance gateway. A plain stuccoed garden wall curves to the left, linking to one of the outer gate piers.

The gate piers are roughly square, measuring approximately 1 metre by 1 metre and standing 4 metres high, with moulded corniced caps and ball finials. The inner pair of piers at the main entrance have simple classical panels on both the inner and outer faces. The outer piers are plain and arranged asymmetrically; the pier to the right of the driveway stands close to the main pier, creating a pedestrian gateway, while the pier to the left is more distant and linked to the main pier by a curved stuccoed wall supporting spear-headed railings. The double gates to the drive and the pedestrian gate are simple in design, consisting of bar railings with small scrollwork beneath the top rail. The main gates are distinguished by marginal standards and cresting along the rail. The lodge was not inspected internally.
