Description
Great Bottom Farmhouse is a large 18th-century L-plan farmhouse. It features English bond brickwork, with rubble stone on the lower walls of the south wing. The steeply pitched slate roof has bracketed eaves and 20th-century brick stacks at the end gables. The symmetrical five-bay east front is two-storey, with a 20th-century glazed entrance porch in the center. The openings have segmental brick arches and brick sills. On the ground floor, there are broad segmental-arched three-light windows, with side-hung 18th-century casements in the center light, and a configuration of 2+2+2 panes. The first floor has five two-light mullion and transom windows, some of which also feature side-hung metal casements. At the back of the house, there are similar two-light transoms on the first floor. The north elevation of the wing has two windows on the first floor, including an original 18th-century transom with a side-hung casement on the left. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch. The west gable of the wing has an external stone stair leading to a first-floor doorway with a boarded door and a two-light transom in the gable head.
Entering from the east front, a lobby leads to the principal ground-floor rooms on the left and right. The parlour features a fireplace with a 19th-century register grate, flanked by two-panel cupboards on each side. The dog-leg stair has square newel posts with moulded caps and rectangular balusters in the attic. On the first floor, there is an 18th-century two-panel door with L-hinges, and the attic contains 18th-century plank and batten doors with strap hinges. The end gable of the west wing on the first floor has a fireplace stair that provides separate independent access to the attic. The tall habitable attic features a collar truss roof, with the principal rafters angled at the foot to provide greater headroom, resembling upper crucks.
