Description
Popular Bridge, also known as Canal Bridge No 87, was built between 1809 and 1812 as part of the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, which aimed to connect the upper Usk valley to the Monmouthshire Canal at Pontymoile. The canal was initially promoted in 1792, with construction starting in 1797 under engineer Thomas Dadford. The bridge is made of coursed rubble and features a roughly squared design, spanning the canal and the tow-path to the east. It has a segmental arch with a keystone, and the parapets curve outward with end pilaster buttresses. This bridge is significant as one of the few remaining early 19th-century bridges from the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal.
