Description

Park Cottages comprise a group of three houses built in the early 19th century, although they may have earlier origins. At the time of inspection in 1996, the cottages were empty and boarded up. Their design features, such as the hoodmoulds, are similar to other estate houses within the Pontypool Park estate, suggesting a construction date around 1840.

The north front is rendered in stucco with a pebbledash finish, and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate. Large chimneys are present, and windows and doors were covered during the original inspection in 1995. The first house faces northeast and is set behind a low wall with iron railings. It has three large gables with plain bargeboards, along with gabled dormers on both roofslopes. A large stone chimney is situated on the right, and a brick chimney is at the rear (left). The first floor windows have hoodmoulds, and on the ground floor, similar windows flank a central doorway which itself is topped with a gabled hood. The elevation to the right has a gable containing first and second floor windows with hoodmoulds, and a ground floor doorway. A gabled dormer sits above a plain window to the left. The return to the right features three first-floor windows, a central doorway with windows on either side. To the right of this, a wing presents a stone chimney, two first-floor windows (in the rightmost window, a cross-framed casement can be seen), an entrance doorway to the left, a broad window to the right, and steps leading to a basement-level doorway and a single lower window block to the right. No joinery features were visible, aside from the window above.

The interiors were not inspected during the resurvey in 1996, but it appears that the layout might be complex, especially if the cottages represent a partial conversion of an older building.
