Description
Milgatw is a 17th-century house constructed from rubble, featuring areas of drystone masonry and traces of limewash. The house faces east and is set behind a small walled garden, with a cowhouse to the south that has a pitched stone yard in front. The roof is primarily covered with corrugated iron, although some thatch remains underneath.
At each end of the house, there are large square rubble-built chimneys, with the southern chimney being larger and both set on plinths with dripmoulds. The front of the house consists of four bays, separated from the cowhouse by a straight masonry joint. A panelled door is located towards the centre, topped by a timber lintel. To the left of the door is a 3-over-6 sash window with a stone lintel, and above it, between the window and the door, is a two-light casement window that includes a diamond mullion, likely not from the 17th century. The upper two bays of the house are clearly later additions, marked by a masonry joint.
The front elevation of the lofted cowhouse has five bays, with a window on the left that replaces an earlier door. There are two doors to the right, including a cross-passage door at the right end. Most of the doors have been renewed.
The ground level at the rear of the house has been raised. There are two blocked windows to the left with projecting stone drips, and a small-paned window to the right with a timber lintel. The wall to the right projects for a chimney stair in the hall, and the area around the cross-passage door has collapsed. There is also a door at the rear of the cowhouse.
Inside, the ground floor features slate flags and large chamfered beams. The hall has a chimney stair to the right of a wide fireplace, which includes a 19th-century iron range and timber mantel. The cross-passage door to the left of the fireplace has a four-centred chamfered timber frame, visible from the cowhouse. The large parlour contains a chimney stair to the left of its fireplace. The roof features rough oak A-frames, though it has not been fully inspected. The condition of the building was deteriorating at the time of the survey in June 1999.
