Description
The Former Colliery Workmen’s Institute is a building designed in a simplified Dutch style, constructed from grey Pennant stone with significant red brick detailing. It features a slate roof with two large ventilators at the ridge. The eastern end has a gable chimney made of red brick, along with a low stack on the southern side. This two-storey structure is set on a high basement.
The entrance front, facing west, consists of five bays separated by red brick pilaster strips. There are moulded brick stringcourses between the storeys, as well as at the sill and window-head levels. A moulded brick cornice with a shaped gable above divides the facade into five bays, with the pilaster strips ending in terracotta finials that feature anthemion detail. Between the pilasters, terracotta copings rise in concave stages to a ball finial at the apex. A clock is positioned in the centre of the gable, surrounded by brickwork. The basement and ground floor windows, which have 20th-century glazing, feature segmental heads and brick surrounds. The first floor has tall round arched windows with brick surrounds and terracotta keystones, although these windows have been blocked. The centre bay includes a projecting square red brick porch that rises to the base of the gable. The porch has round arched openings on the ground floor, with a door facing west and windows on either side, all of which are 20th-century. The tall upper stage of the porch features angle-pilasters and small round windows set high on each side, along with a moulded brick cornice.
The northern side of the building has six bays and three storeys, with pilaster strips and stringcourses similar to the front. The windows match those on the facade, with the tall upper windows having smaller windows inserted. The southern side is similarly detailed, and attached to the eastern end is a lower four-storey former caretaker’s house, now functioning as a medical centre. This house consists of three narrow bays, rendered with brick detailing for the quoins and window surrounds, featuring 20th-century glazing. It has a slate roof and a broad gable end with a brick chimney stack.
The interior has been modernised, featuring a large upper room with a two-stage raised dais at the rear, which has painted timber panelled fronts.
