Description
The terraced steps at The Gables are a Grade II listed feature consisting of an asymmetrical stone staircase that rises from a grassy terrace, which was previously used for tennis, to the paved terrace in front of the house. The steps are constructed from stone rubble, with some rockfaced elements, and feature roughly dressed stone coping. At the base, which has swept sides and shallow coping stones, there are roughly dressed quoins and a segmental arched alcove with rough voussoirs that once held a seat. The staircase includes two rounded approach steps on the right, followed by a flight of steps that returns behind the recess and then turns again to ascend the slope in three uneven sections. These sections are flanked by low walls with end piers.
