Description

19 Gelli-deg is a cottage forming part of a terraced row, dating back to the 18th century and significantly altered since. The row originally comprised a 3-bay house with a small service range set back to the right. Six cottages were later added in two blocks, making up the remainder of the present properties numbered 16, 17, 19, and 21.

The upper row of three cottages, including number 19, have painted rendered exteriors with imitation slate roofs and share a common eaves line, although their ridge line is higher than the row to their right. Numbers 19 and 20 (now part of number 21) were initially a mirrored pair, with end stacks. Number 21 is slightly larger and shares a stack with number 20, while number 19 shares a stack with number 18. The cottages now have 20th-century glazing and doors. The original design of the mirrored pair 19 and 20 featured a door to the inner bay and a window on each floor to the outer bay; the door to number 20 has since been removed. The openings have been widened to both floors of number 19. A lean-to addition is visible at the rear.

An interior inspection was not possible. However, in 1988, a survey of numbers 20–21 (upper row) revealed oak trusses with collars, which were raised when upper rooms were ceiled. These trusses sat on seating blocks, and the roof was believed to have originally been stone-tiled. Each house originally had a ground floor plan consisting of a kitchen, a sleeping room, and a pantry, with a single upper room. They featured quarter-turn timber stairs with a cupboard beneath and a handrail at the top corners. The floors were supported by cross-axial floor joists, and the ground floors were originally laid with flagstones.
