Description
The Church Hall at the Catholic Church of St Dyfrig is a 6-bay hall built with reinforced concrete, displaying influences from the Arts and Crafts movement. Its exterior features roughcast walls painted cream and a slate roof with overhanging eaves. The western gable end has central replaced double panel doors beneath a painted timber boarded sign that indicates it is the Church Hall of St Dyfrig’s, presented in both Welsh and English. This entrance is flanked by buttresses that support a 5-light mullioned window above, which provides light to the gallery. On either side of the entrance are two pairs of segmental-headed windows that illuminate the vestibule. The side walls are notable for their prominent battered buttresses, and the windows feature brick segmental heads.
On the southern side, the windows are shorter in the two bays at the western end to accommodate the gallery. There are escape doors inserted in the bay to the right of center. The northern side has similar windows, but they are shortened due to a later flat-roofed projection in front. At the rear, there is an integral lower hipped roof projection with blocked small-pane windows.
Inside, the vestibule is finished with a boarded wainscot that extends to the gallery stairs on both sides. Half-lit panelled doors lead into the main hall. The gallery features a panelled front and is positioned opposite the stage, which has a proscenium designed as a lintel with a keystone. Half-lit doors flank the stage. The ceiling of the hall is a 6-bay segmental plaster design with wide ribs supported by corbels, concealing steel trusses.
