Description
The Machine Bridge, also known as Pont y Doctor, is a Grade II* listed structure featuring three segmental arches supported by piers made of coursed hammer-dressed stone, with concrete spandrels. On the northern side, which faces upstream, there are V-shaped stone cutwaters that rise to the height of the imposts. Above these cutwaters, concrete continues to form brackets that support an added footway and parapet that project out from the original bridge.
The footway includes a parapet made up of a low concrete wall with vertical ribs, along with cast iron railings that are complemented by intermediate and terminal concrete piers. The southern side of the bridge has a similar parapet but has been widened by extending bases out from the original piers, from which uprights support the deck. The parapets on both sides feature terminal piers of rock-faced stone that are integrated with added rock-faced abutments.
