Description

The Old Probate Registry is a Gothic Revival building dating from the 18th century. It is constructed from roughly dressed Pennant sandstone with bands of Bridgend stone, and features Bath limestone ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high with four bays, the southernmost bay forming a slightly projecting cross wing with a steeply pitched hipped roof and lower eaves. This wing is single-storey with a raised floor level, and houses the public office. Upper window lights are trefoil-headed, while lower window lights are flat-headed, with columned shafts between the lights. The first bay contains two-light windows; the second bay has three-light windows and incorporates a chimney stack on the verge with three truncated flues. The third bay features two 2-light windows on the first floor, and a window and trefoil-headed porch with a trefoil-headed canopy and gable on the ground floor. The fourth bay is distinguished by two tall, trefoil-headed 2-light windows. The right return elevation reflects a similar arrangement of windows, with one window either side of an external chimney. A lower rear wing is located behind this. The chimney reduces to a cylindrical shaft that has been truncated. The main roof is steeply pitched, although less so than the wing, and has a truncated two-flue stack on the left gable. The left return elevation is blind except for a gable oculus. The rear elevation is not visible.

The main office interior has been altered with a false ceiling, although a possible surviving hammer-beam roof is suggested above. The building has been converted into modern office use and is substantially altered internally.
