Description

Duke Street Arcade, which includes 11 and 12 Duke Street, is a building constructed from grey brown Forest of Dean ashlar with a slate roof and red brick chimneys. It stands three storeys high and features three windows. The upper storeys are highlighted by pilasters, and there is a dentil cornice at the parapet topped with pinnacles. The second floor has tripartite windows with colonettes, while the first floor boasts three large arched windows with keystones and splayed display windows. A deep fascia board is positioned above the central entrance, which is flanked by shops numbered 11 and 12 Duke Street.

The arcade itself runs south to connect with High Street Arcade, with even numbers on the west side and odd numbers on the east side, leading to number 13. The arcade features a glazed roof supported by slim iron girders. The shopfronts are designed with panelled, classically-derived pilasters, and the upper floors have 4-light mullion and transom windows. There is an archway with a wooden Art-Nouveau rail. At the southern end, there is a return featuring a 3-light mullion and transom window with a lunette above. Notably, the shop front at 12 Duke Street (Jotham's) has metal framing for large glass windows with convex corners and tops, including one window facing Duke Street and a doorway with three windows leading into the arcade.
