Description

This is a small chapel built in the Gothic Revival style. It was originally constructed in 1820 and substantially rebuilt in 1870. The chapel is built of coursed rockfaced stone, with snecked stone on the sides, and ashlar dressings, with the two stone types used decoratively. It has an artificial slate roof. The north gabled entrance facade has three bays with a large, three-light geometric window at the centre, featuring quatrefoil tracery, a hoodmould, and decorative voussoirs. Above the window is a louvred quatrefoil in the apex, and below is a wide, moulded, pointed-arch doorway flanked by nook shafts and buttresses with stone-tiled offsets. To each side of the doorway is a trefoil-headed lancet, with diagonal buttresses at the corners, and a plinth. The east and west side elevations each have five bays separated by full-height buttresses with offsets, with a blank bay at each end. The three intermediate bays each feature a tall, wide, trefoil-headed window under a pointed arched hoodmould and ashlar banding. A large round window is present in the south gable end, featuring quatrefoil tracery, a decorative ashlar and rockfaced surround, and a small quatrefoil apex opening. Attached to the south is a lower cross wing. The east gable end of the cross wing has a corniced stone stack on the verge, a single-light trefoil-headed window to the left, and a pointed doorway to the right, both with hoodmoulds. The west gable end has a further stack, two single-light trefoil-headed windows, and a small plaque inscribed "Bethania Calvinistic Methodist Chapel built 1820 removed and rebuilt 1870." The interior has been substantially altered and converted into two rooms by the insertion of a floor. Original rear gallery balusters have been retained, and some other woodwork has been re-used. The upper floor has a later 20th-century boarded ceiling, set below an earlier, higher ceiling which remains in situ; the corbelled responds to the trusses are visible beneath. There were originally no staircases from the front lobby, but a new staircase has been installed at the rear.
