Description

Nos. 1-19 Windsor Esplanade comprise a terrace of seventeen houses built in the 19th century. The houses are constructed of snecked grey and brown local sandstone with bathstone dressings, and have generally slate roofs with red brick chimneys. Each house has three windows and two storeys, with round-headed attic dormers set behind a decorative, pierced bathstone parapet, some of which has been lost. The two houses at each end of the terrace, and the central three houses, project slightly forward, featuring pinnacled shaped gables with bathstone copings, and square-headed windows with hoodmoulds within the gables. The central house has a slightly narrower, lower shaped gable. A bathstone cornice runs along the terrace, below which is a band of red brick and red and black terracotta tiles. Window and door surrounds are in bathstone, topped with rectangular hood moulds. A bathstone band course runs at first floor sill level. The first floor windows are single above the doorways, and paired above the ground floor semi-hexagonal bay windows, which have cornices and low parapets. The central house of the terrace differs with three single windows on the first floor and an extra window on the ground floor to the right of the bay. The glazing has been largely replaced. The west-facing return is rendered and features a broad shaped gable. The east-facing return is stone-built with a triangular gable, incorporating two blocked windows on each floor.
