Description

The United Free Church, also known as Ramoth Chapel, is an early 19th-century chapel with a square plan, constructed of stucco. It features a steeply-pitched hipped slate roof. The front elevation is accentuated by quoins and includes a central semi-circular doorway set within arcading, which has double-leaf doors that have been restored, each consisting of three moulded and fielded panels. Above the central window, there is a round-headed sash window, with a tall round-headed sash window on each side. A datestone above the central window reads "Ramoth 1828". The side elevations each have two windows, while the rear elevation also has two windows. There are modern single-storey extensions to the north and west. The northwest and southeast walls of the chapel yard are made of stone rubble and are lined on the inner sides with 19th-century headstones, some dating from the early to mid-19th century, including a shaped headstone for Anne, wife of Evan Llewelyn of Aberthin, who died on August 22, 1834.

Inside, the chapel is remarkably well-preserved and retains an early 19th-century character. It features a panelled lobby with gallery stairs on each side and panelled doors leading into the chapel. A three-sided gallery supported by classical iron columns has a wooden panelled frontal and early 19th-century gallery benches, with straight and turned balusters on the stairs. The body of the chapel contains a complete set of early to mid-19th-century box pews. The pulpit, which has flanking stairs, features both turned and straight balusters. There are panelled doors leading to the west hall, and an immersion font is located below the floor in front of the pulpit. The original roof structure is said to remain above a modern suspended ceiling.
