Description

Old Star Cottage is a three-window cottage dating from the 18th century, consisting of one-and-a-half storeys. It is built of rubble stone and features a thatched roof. There is a massive stepped external stack on the east side, which has a curved profile with a bakeoven at its rear, and an end stack on the west side. Lean-tos with stone tiled roofs are attached to the west gable end and the rear.

The cottage has a symmetrical front facing north. The central boarded front door, which has a square head, is flanked by three-light multi-pane windows with flat heads and stone sills. To the left of the door is a very small light with a stone surround. On the first floor, there are three windows that rise to the eaves, all of which are two-light multi-pane casements. The front of the west lean-to features a similar window, set within the blocking of a former doorway that has a hoodmould. The west end of the lean-to also has a similar window under a hoodmould with a tile sill. There is a boarded door leading to the rear and a tall brick stack. The west end of the rear lean-to includes a masonry stack and a half-lit boarded door to its left. The rear has a single light flanked by three-light windows, similar to those found elsewhere. To the east of the lean-to is a window on the upper storey of the house, likely providing light to the stair.

The cottage has a two-unit direct-entry plan with the kitchen located in the rear lean-to. The interior has been modernised. Upon entering through the front door, one arrives in a small lobby that contains a 20th-century half-lit door leading into the living room. There is a 20th-century fireplace on the east side, and a straight staircase leading to the rear in a small southeast projection. The two rooms are separated by a partition wall with a doorway on the left. The west room also features a 20th-century fireplace.
