Description
22 Archer Road is a two-storey building with ample attics, designed as a symmetrical pair. The ground floors are constructed of red brick with some painted bathstone dressings, while the upper floors feature half-timbering adorned with red fish-scale tile hanging. The roofs are covered with slate, and there is a central chimney made of red brick.
The central part of the building showcases two boldly projecting semi-octagonal bays that have splayed hipped roofs at the attic level. These bays contain horned sash windows, with small panes in the upper sashes. The fish-scale tiling continues along the front and sides of the building at this level. On the first floor, the bays have horned sash windows flanked by inner two-light and outer three-light sash windows, with the building being half-timbered at this level. The ground floor bay windows project slightly further forward and are topped with shallow fish-scale tile roofs, featuring casement windows set in bathstone surrounds.
Each outer section on the ground floor has verandahs with red tile roofs. Number 22 has elaborately turned balusters and strapwork low railings, while No 20 has a simpler treatment. Flanking the projecting bays, each house has a three-light window with an arched central light, a smaller window, and double doors topped with segmental-headed windows and panelled below. The ground floor windows and doors feature attractive Art Nouveau-style stained glass, except for the doors at No 22. The outermost window of No 20 lacks stained glass, while the equivalent window of No 22 has been converted into a door.
The ground floor of No 20 includes a well-preserved interior, featuring a staircase with elaborately turned newels and balusters, as well as panelled ceilings with decorative bosses at the intersections.
