Description
A pair of semi-detached houses dating from approximately 1899, built near similar properties. The houses are two storeys high with generous attic space, and display a symmetrical design. The ground floors are built of red brick with some painted bathstone dressings, while the upper floors are half-timbered with red fish-scale tile hanging; the roofs are slate-covered. A central red brick chimney rises from the composition.
The houses feature two prominently projecting semi-octagonal bays with splayed hipped roofs at attic level. These bays have horned sash windows with small panes in the upper sashes. Fish-scale tiling covers the front and sides of the houses, continuing upwards along the front. The bays incorporate sash windows on the first floor, flanked on the main elevation by inner two-light and outer three-light sash windows, all within a half-timbered section of the building. The ground floor bay windows project slightly, sheltered by shallow fish-scale tile roofs and featuring casement windows in bathstone surrounds. Each house has verandahs with red tile roofs; number 20 has elaborately turned balusters and strapwork low railings, while number 22 has a simpler treatment. Flanking the projecting bays, each house has a three-light window with an arched central light, a smaller window, and double doors with segmental-headed windows and panelling below. Most ground floor windows and doors have Art Nouveau-style stained glass, with the exception of the doors at number 22. An outermost window at number 20 lacks stained glass, and the equivalent window at number 22 has been converted into a door.
Inside number 20, the ground floor retains good original features, including a staircase with elaborately turned newels and balusters, and panelled ceilings with bosses at the intersections.
