Description
The former church school is a Victorian building dating from 1858, as indicated by the date stone on the front elevation, which is inscribed "1858 by RCNC," referring to R.C. Nicholl Carne, whose wife is commemorated in the nearby parish church of St Tydfil. The school features a strong architectural composition with a distinctive asymmetric plan, where the school hall is stepped down from the schoolhouse. It is primarily two storeys high, constructed of coursed limestone with steeply pitched Welsh slated roofs. The main range is aligned on a north-south axis, with a two-storey range at the rear. The southern lower range steps down in height, culminating in a single-storey range at the far southern end.
The building includes three ashlar stacks, one for each two-storey range, and a bellcote at the northern end of the main block, which retains one bell. The pronounced gables rise from the eaves and feature plain bargeboards on all main elevations, with timber casements below. At the northern end of the main range, there is a single-storey porch that has a pair of boarded double doors and a small lancet window on the front elevation, along with an inscribed plaque above. The ground floor has a centrally located three-light window between the first-floor casements. The main range, which serves as the hall, is double-height and has a 2-light, twin-transomed small-pane window, with a similar window on the northern gable end.
At the southern end, there is a single-storey bay that contains a single timber boarded door with a four-pane sash window to the left. The rear features further casements set beneath the gable on the central range, with a larger casement below on the ground floor. The southern elevation of the rear range has another gable with a casement arrangement and a boarded door with a sash window to the right, topped with a hoodmould. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to with a slated roof on the northern elevation.
