Description
The Former Ebenezer Particular Baptist Chapel is a disused chapel located to the southwest of St Tydfil's parish church in the center of the village, facing the road that leads west out of Llysworney. It was built in 1843 for the Ebenezer Particular Baptists.
The chapel has a small, oblong plan with rendered elevations that were originally painted white and features a slated pitched roof. The front (north) elevation has two tall pointed arched windows with intersecting glazing bars above small paned sashes, flanking a small porch that was added later. The east and south elevations have identical pairs of windows, with remnants of dark blue glazing visible in the tracery. The east elevation also shows evidence of a former central two-centred doorway that is now blocked. The west elevation is unlit.
Inside, the chapel retains its furnishings, including a small flight of steps leading up to the platform at the south end. Seating for the elders is located to the east, adjacent to the podium, with three rows of simple pews facing the podium and extending to the rear wall. The plain plaster ceiling features a large central ceiling rose with acanthus detail and a simple moulded cornice. A stove is positioned against the west wall, midway down the chapel.
The front garden boundary includes cast-iron railings set on a dwarf rubble wall, with some missing sections and fleur-de-lis finials. There are also rubble stone gate piers with capping and a gate that matches the railings.
At the time of inspection in June 1995, the chapel and its boundary were noted to be in poor condition. It is listed as grade II due to its mid-19th century architecture, which retains some original details despite later alterations in the 19th century.
