Description
The Old Sheep Washery is a single-storey building dating from the 18th century. It features whitewashed stone rubble walls and a roof with two bays covered in corrugated cladding. At the northwest end, there is a small stone chimney stack. The northwest gable wall includes a small shuttered opening on the east side and an egress for water to the stream bed on the west side. The southwest elevation has an opening at its base that leads to an internal basin, while the southeast gable wall has a wide opening on the east side.
On the west side, approximately one third of the building's surface is occupied by a sunken basin for washing, which receives water from a pipe in the southeast gable end. A flight of steps at the north end of the basin leads up to a platform with a stone flagged floor and a low stone rubble balustrade above the basin, although this balustrade is now partly demolished. The northeast wall contains the remains of a fireplace. It is believed that this structure was used as a communal laundry.
