Description

Pwll-y-wrach is a house likely constructed from local rubblestone with Roman cement facing, featuring a rusticated ground floor and smooth upper sections that imitate ashlar. The gable ends are smooth rendered, while the rear elevation is roughcast, topped with Welsh slate roofs. The building has a plan of two parallel ranges with a rear wing, standing two storeys high with an attic and a nine-bay front that includes a central entry leading to a stairhall.

The main south elevation displays nine windows arranged in three groups of three, with the central section featuring a pediment and windows that are set more widely apart. All windows are 6 over 6 pane sashes with rusticated surrounds and voussoir heads. The central porch is made of Forest of Dean sandstone ashlar, topped with a bell-cast slate roof that has a dentil cornice and iron cresting. The porch opening includes stone-framed sidelights and five square lights above, along with a part-glazed panelled door and a triple overlight. The pediment is adorned with a relief plaque depicting a lamb carrying the Cross. The house has brick gable stacks, including a third central stack.

The east gable is plain, while the west gable features a late 20th-century conservatory on the ground floor, a 2 over 2 pane sash window on the first floor in the rear range, and a garret window in both ranges. The rear range also has gable stacks, and the rear elevation includes 6 over 6 sash windows with keyed surrounds and a canted bay at the west end.

The interior details were not available during the resurvey. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales had limited access and noted that the front range had an entirely remodelled front hall dating from the same period as the porch, with decorative features in the main living rooms also from this time. In the rear range, the main stair is set around a well and features a balustrade with slender turned balusters on an open string, three to each tread, and square fluted newel posts. The servants' stair to the east has a balustrade in a 'Chinese Chippendale' style. The original roof trusses include collar beams and butt-purlins but lack ridge pieces.
