Description

Ty Maen is a two-unit, two-storey range dating from the 16th century, with a rear wing to the north, forming an L-shaped plan. The rear wing is slightly lower, following the slope of the ground away to the northeast. A single-storey, 20th-century lean-to extends from the angle where the main range and wing meet. The building is constructed of lime-washed or rendered rubble masonry, with slate roofs. It features a large masonry end stack to the west and a central masonry ridge stack.

The front of the house faces south, away from the road. A wide lean-to porch is situated to the left of centre. The front door is set within a chamfered stone Tudor arch with hour-glass stops, and has a half-glazed door with an ornate strap hinge. Ground floor windows have sunk-chamfered mullions and hood moulds; one three-light window is to the left of the porch, another two-light window to the right, and a further three-light window to the right again. A small light is positioned to the far left end, sheltered by a triangular hoodmould. The upper-storey windows are later additions, contemporary with the raising of the roof, and are two-light casements with segmentally arched heads, aligned with the ground floor windows. A small light is situated to the right of the porch. All windows are now fitted with PVCu glazing.

A small upper-storey window is visible in the west gable end, to the right of the stack. The rear of the house is dominated by the gable end of the parlour wing, featuring a two-light window with a sunk-chamfered mullion and a hoodmould in the upper storey. To the right is a projection for the staircase. The 20th-century lean-to has a stone end stack to the right and a planked door to the left. Between these is a small light and a two-light casement window. A similar window is situated above the lean-to, to the left of centre.

The building's plan reveals a chimney-backing-on-the-entry arrangement, with a cross passage in the outer room (kitchen), which is west of the main hall. The kitchen has a large stone fireplace at the west end, a chamfered timber lintel, inglenook seats, a curved recess to the rear, and a bake oven, which may be a later addition. A boarded door to the left of the fireplace leads to a lobby, likely a former pantry, although the curved wall profile suggests a possible former fireplace stairs. There is also a small cupboard on the north side of the room with a boarded door. Five deeply chamfered cross beams, with filleted ogee stops, are visible; the one above the fireplace is supported on corbels, though only the central one is believed to be original.

A Tudor-arched door, with chamfered stone jambs and hour-glass stops, leads from the kitchen into the hall, positioned adjacent to the front entrance. Draw-bar slots are visible on its far side. The hall has a large fireplace with a slightly cambered stone lintel and a single cross beam with ogee stops. A pair of chamfered Tudor-arched stone doorways lead north into the parlour and towards the staircase projection. The doorway to the parlour has hour-glass stops. The staircase projection is now accessed via a new doorway within the lean-to. Boarded doors are present throughout the interior.
