Description
The stable block at Merthyr Mawr House dates from the 18th century and consists of a central square coach house facing west, flanked by L-shaped wings that enclose a yard. The building is constructed of coursed limestone. The coach house is slightly advanced from the wings and raised slightly above them. It has a pyramidal slate roof with an open bellcote and weathervane, while the wings have hipped slate roofs, all supported by wide, bracketed eaves.
The central doorway of the coach house is tall and wide with a segmental head. The upper storey features fixed lights set under flat arches, and a clock is positioned centrally. To either side of the coach house are wings with smaller doorways, each fitted with double boarded doors. The north wing has a boarded door and small-pane sash window in the lower storey, both set under flat arches, and a further sash window below the wall plate. Its return wall, facing the yard, contains a boarded stable door to the left, a small-paned sash window to the right, a boarded door, and a replaced window, all similarly arched. The upper storey has a central boarded loft opening under the eaves. The south wing mirrors this form, although details differ. To the right of the double doors are a horned sash window and a boarded door (leading to straight stairs). The upper storey features a central sash window. The return wall facing the yard has a boarded door with an overlight to the left, a flanking fixed light, a blind window, and a doorway to the right. The upper storey contains a two-light casement window, inserted into the original loft opening, with boarding below.
The end wall of the north wing incorporates a tall blind segmental-headed window flanked by blind windows, all under flat arches, and a two-light casement in a previous opening above. A lean-to is attached to the outer side of this wing with boarded double doors. The end wall of the south wing is similar, with blind windows and a small casement inserted into the central window; a two-light casement is positioned above. The outer wall of the wing, facing south, has brickwork in the lower portion and three two-light casements inserted into original openings below the eaves.
The rear wall is constructed of brick in the lower storey and forms the west wall of the kitchen garden. The coach house has an infilled central doorway and two upper-storey windows, with a casement inserted to the left and latticework boarding added to the right. To the right of the coach house, the north wing has hornless small-pane sashes flanking a central loft doorway, below which is a segmental-headed doorway with a blind window to its left. The south wing has a small-pane sash window to the upper right, immediately to the left of a stone stack. In the lower storey is a central blind doorway with a blind window to the right and a boarded door with a small-pane overlight to the left.
The stable block is now used as workshops and for storage. The north wing retains original stalls, and a section of stone setts remains as flooring. The lean-to on the north side of the north wing has a flagstone floor with a central drain and incorporates a dairy with salting slabs and a plaster barrel ceiling, which is also believed to have functioned as an ice house.
