Description

The Cottage is a large house built in the early to mid 19th century, with significant later additions. It features a two-storey rendered exterior topped with a natural slate roof. The building has six chimneys—three axial and three gable—made of ashlar and Staffordshire blue bricks, complete with pots. The layout is L-shaped, with the main section oriented east-west to take advantage of southern views, and a long two-storey section running north-south that has three chimneys. There is also a smaller two-storey section on the west side, which has a large gable chimney that connects both ranges.

The front (south elevation) includes a three-window arrangement with 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and a modern conservatory on the ground floor. The east elevation features a 20th-century stone staircase leading to a separate entrance, with modern windows in enlarged openings and a projecting door canopy. At the eastern end of the front elevation, there is a full-height apsidal bay with a central pair of front doors and flanking fifteen-pane sash windows without horns. Above this, there are three twelve-pane sash windows. There is also evidence of an earlier verandah canopy between the ground and first floors. The smaller two-storey north range has its main doorway on the west elevation, with sash windows on the east side at both ground and first floor levels.

Restoration work was underway at the time of inspection in June 1995. The interior, which is simply detailed and dates from the late 19th century, includes some later fittings and remodelling from the time of World War II when the building was occupied by the army. The staircase features a cast-iron balustrade, likely from the 20th century.
