Description
The Bassett Family Tomb Enclosure, located in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Hilary, features a pair of sarcophagi commemorating Richard and James Bassett, surrounded by high metal railings topped with spear finials.
Richard Bassett's tomb is situated to the south and is inscribed with the following details: "Richard Bassett, Esq. of Beaupre died Nov 8, 1849 aged 51 years, last male heir of the ancient family of Bassett of Beaupre. Also Frances Bassett his relict who died at Nice 2 May, 1864, aged 64." The family coat of arms is carved into the tomb, along with the family motto in Welsh: "Gwell angau na chwilydd" (Better death than dishonour).
To the north lies the tomb of Major William James Bassett of Beaupre, who passed away in 1871. This tomb features a gabled cruciform top, with the family coat of arms carved at each end.
