Description
The barn and cow-houses at Pen Ucha Dre consist of three ranges arranged around a stockyard. The north-south range is two storeys high, built of rubble stone, and topped with a corrugated metal roof. The east-west ranges are single storey and covered with corrugated asbestos roofs.
The threshing barn, which is the north-south range, features a central wagon bay with boarded double doors that have segmental heads with voussoirs. On the west side, the doorway is flanked by ventilation slits. To the left of the doorway is another boarded door under a similar segmental head, while to the right is a wide opening fitted with a concrete lintel. The first floor has four openings with boarded shutters, symmetrically arranged under segmental heads. The south gable end includes a boarded door on the first floor, also under a segmental head, which is accessed by an external stone stair. The north gable end has a door for each storey, offset to the left. The east side of this range faces the stockyard, where the wagon bay doors are flanked by a ventilation slit on the left, and the right side has been converted into a small window. The upper floor features two hatches that align with the inner two openings on the west side.
The single storey ranges are attached to the north and south ends of the east side of the threshing barn. The south range, which likely served as a byre, is open to the stockyard and consists of six bays supported by narrow cast iron columns, with a stone pier located four bays from the west end. The external side of this range has one boarded door on the left under a segmental head. The north range is a six-bay cow-house, featuring six round-arched openings with voussoirs facing into the stockyard. One of these openings has boarded doors, while the others are partially blocked with doors or stone. At the rear (north), there are two doors leading into the cow-house, both under segmental stone heads, and to their left is a window with red brick dressings.
There was no access to the interior at the time of inspection on January 22, 1998.
