Description

The bridge, built of coursed rubble stone, provides access on the main drive to Hensol Castle. It is a broad, four-arched structure with ramped approaches and part-balustraded parapets, giving it an ornamental appearance. The unusually high number of arches, and their substantial size, suggest a design intended for a large river rather than a small stream powering a mill. The original voussoirs of the arches remain, but the arches have been infilled and water is now directed through a pipe. The central section of the balustraded parapet has been partially rebuilt in cement, while the ends feature closed parapets with chamfered freestone piers. Gothic flying buttresses are located at the bridge’s main entrance, where it adjoins a sweeping boundary wall.
