Description

The Coychurch Cemetery comprises two chapels, Capel Crallo and Capel Coity, along with associated buildings. Capel Crallo, likely of the 20th century, is a striking structure located on the edge of a lake. Its facade features five convex bays of stone and concrete, punctuated by full-height stained glass windows in wooden frames, separated by giant concrete mullions and sheltered by an overhanging concrete roof. A concrete "porte cochere" with fluted piers and a canopy for funeral vehicles is situated on the left, while a circular stone vestry with a conical roof stands to the right. Rising above is the main chapel, notable for its asymmetrical curved roof, deep rounded eaves, and a swept-back cowl-like turret, formerly taller, surmounted by a cross. The side frontage displays a slanting roofline, rounded eaves, and a coarse pebbly texture of concrete panels, with a range of square-headed windows incorporating giant mullions. A covered walkway of stone, concrete, and perspex with brick paving, known as the Flower Court, is positioned to the right, providing space for floral tributes. A high rubble wall encloses the service yard, leading to the second chapel, Capel Coity, which is square in shape, constructed of wood and stone, with a shallow pyramidal roof and overhanging eaves. An angled wooden walkway, supported by metal piers and featuring memorial plaques on the walls, leads to the double part-glazed entrance doors, offering views into the interior. A cloister with a stone walkway connects the two chapels, while a ramped approach to St Crallo's Chapel, featuring four bays of nine full-height stained glass panels, culminates in a small stone office.

The interior of St Crallo's Chapel is notable for its design. A ramped approach begins the experience; each curved bay has plaques and interspersed stained glass panels, with names of the deceased. The floor is brick on either side of the carpeted walkway. The chapel is filled with light from a large stained glass rear window, a range of low side windows, and an angled roof light beneath the turret positioned over the bier. A high, plain, white wall behind this bay forms a focal point, visible from the entrance, with the congregation seated to the right and a decorative organ case on the front wall. Light wood predominates the furnishings, floor, and curved suspended ceiling. Capel Coity’s interior is simple, featuring a square, tent-like metal support for the square, boarded, panelled roof. The walls are diagonally boarded, with a stone end wall and a continuous band of eaves lights around all four sides.
