Description
The Hopcyn Cross is a high cross monument made of course grained grey granite, built on a base of three high octagonal steps. The base is shaped like a cross with infilled angles. The tapered shaft features a late Celtic type angular interlace on each main face and is topped with a wheel cross, which is also decorated with interlace and a sycamore leaf at the center. The cross has inscriptions on the basal steps: on the east side, it reads "COFIWN / WILL HOPCYN 1701-1741 EF A CANODD GWENITH GWYN." The north side lists notable figures from Tir Iarll: "ADFYD / TWM IFAN PRYS / ANTONI POWEL / SAMUEL JONES / LEWYS HOPCYN / SION BRADFORD," along with the inscription "Rev R Pendril Llewelyn MA" on the base. The west side states "CEFN / ANN THOMAS 1704-1727 / Y FERCH O CEFN YDFA," and the base notes "Brindley Richards (Brinli), archdderwydd Cymru 1972-1975." Finally, the south side includes "YDFA / DAFYDD NICLAS / RICHARD PRYCE / LLYFNWY / GEULANNYDD / CADRAWD," with "Christopher William RBA" on the base.
