Description

The group of five tombs is located south of the tower of the Church of St Cynwyd. From west to east, the first tomb is a sandstone chest featuring recessed wide corner pilasters, a chamfered base, and a moulded ledger slab. It is inscribed on the side to David Treharne of Pentre Farm, Ystrad Dyfodwg, who died in 1860 at the age of 18. The second tomb is another sandstone chest with slender end pilasters, chamfered top and side panels, and fan corners, inscribed on top to Edwd Thomas of Nant-y-llyn, who died in 1760, William Thomas, who died in 1833, and others. The third tomb is a plain ashlar sandstone chest with a moulded ledger slab, inscribed to Elizabeth, daughter of Hopkin and Elizabeth Lloyd of Penm....., who died in 1761 (?). The fourth tomb features a ledger slab enclosed in early 19th-century iron railings with trefoil heads, square corner stanchions, and pointed gadrooned finials, dedicated to Elias Jenkins of Henrdre Owen, who died in 1814, with his brother Lewis Jenkins added in 1826. The fifth tomb is a low chest tomb with wide corner balusters and a slightly hipped moulded capstone, inscribed with an illegible Welsh legend, who died in 1856, with an addition from 1858 in English. Lastly, there is a scrolled marble headstone with a kerb, dedicated to Myfanwy Lloyd of Porthcawl, who died in 1930, included to complete the group.
