Description
The calcining kilns at Cefn Cribwr ironworks are built from local sandstone and brick made on site. The structure features a central segmental brick-arched tunnel vault, which has finely laid facing stone voussoirs. This vault allowed a plateway to run directly to the upper part of the charging house. The plateway is made up of simple rectangular section fish-bellied rails, each 4 feet (1.22 metres) long, set to a gauge of 4 feet 6 inches (1.4 metres) and supported by cast iron chairs that are bolted to large stones in the track formation. On either side of the central arch, there are similar but slightly narrower arches that open from the north side to the calcining kilns, each consisting of a brick-lined 'V'-shaped oven. The upper section of the kilns is no longer intact.
