Description

Pyle Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, also known as Capel y Pil, along with its schoolroom and forecourt railings, is a notable building constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof. The chapel features a symmetrical gabled front, with lateral round-headed door openings that contain 20th-century framed and boarded doors, positioned beneath original overlights adorned with stained glass. At the center, there are two very tall round-headed windows with margin glazing, set within ashlar voussoired arches, along with shorter windows above the doors. The design includes a stone bracketed cornice and timber modillion eaves beneath the pediment. A weathered date stone in the tympanum is unreadable, but a later stone placed between the central windows provides historical context. The side elevation showcases two tiers of similar margin-glazed round-headed windows.

The adjoining schoolroom or vestry gable is slightly set back, featuring a central door that is blocked, with side windows and a window above the door that resemble those of the chapel. There is a small round-headed louvred vent in the gable head and iron ventilators located beneath the windows.

The forecourt in front of the chapel and vestry/schoolroom is enclosed by cast iron railings atop a low stone wall, with the railings featuring a circular central ring in each panel, supported by square cast iron stanchions.

Inside the chapel, a panel-fronted gallery, likely added in 1862, extends around three sides, rounded at the entrance end, and is supported by iron columns. It has a moulded timber front with a dentilled cornice. The pulpit is positioned between the two central front windows. The ceiling above the perimeter cornice includes a central rose and diagonal ribs that extend to parallel side ribs, with ventilators at the corners where they intersect. The gallery contains four tiers of seats and retains a clock facing the pulpit. The schoolroom features two lateral fireplaces and stacks.
