Description

The Ruined Undercroft at St Mary's Abbey is a three-bay vaulted structure oriented east to west, constructed from roughly coursed stone with quoins. It features an arcade of three pointed arches that survive up to just above their apex, although the eastern arch on the north side is no longer present. There is a low impost band beneath the arches, which is chamfered on the underside. The fronts of the piers have pilasters, and wide arches are present at both the eastern and western ends, though the dressings for these arches have not survived. The eastern piers are integrated into short north-south walls with quoins, which may indicate a corridor or range beyond. A break in this wall further to the north suggests the presence of a doorway. Additionally, there is a large pier or wall fragment against the north side of the northwest pier, and a short wall connects to the western side of the southwest pier. The western and central bays feature quadripartite ribbed vaults, supported by low scalloped corbels that are positioned between the vaults and support chamfered ribs.
