Description
The War Memorial features a narrow, tapering polygonal shaft made of limestone, topped with a Celtic cross. There is a moulded shaft ring near the top. The memorial stands on a square base with chamfered angles and top edges, which rests on a three-tier platform. The lower two tiers are constructed of rubble stone and capped with slabs. It is situated within a small square enclosure, surrounded by low walls to the north and west, a churchyard wall to the east, and a park boundary wall to the south.
An inscription on the northern (front) face of the base honors those who died in the First World War (1914-18), with their names listed below. A further inscription on the western face begins with the words, "They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old ...". The upper tier of the platform is dedicated to the memory of Z. Paynter Williamson (1848-1921), who served as the Vicar of Margam for 41 years and was chaplain to the territorial force. Additionally, a stone attached to the face of the central tier of the platform commemorates three men who died in the Second World War (1939-45).
