Description

The Wern Independent Chapel dates to 1864 and is constructed of stucco with a slate roof. The simple facade features fluted angle pilasters and a pedimental gable with moulded string and verge boards, all set within moulded stucco surrounds. A small keyed roundel with a glazed quatrefoil sits atop the gable, above a plaque bearing the inscription "Wern Capel Annibynol 1864" in raised capitals. Long arched side windows and a central triplet window, all with moulded surrounds and keystones, are also present. The central window features pilasters to both the surround and the window itself, with an arched centre light flanked by narrower, slightly lower arched side-lights. A door with matching pilasters and a moulded arch leads to recessed panelled doors. Further long arched windows are found to the sides and rear of the building.

The interior includes a three-sided gallery supported by seven fluted iron columns. The gallery front is painted with curved angles, a deep cornice with paired brackets (the brackets set within panelled pilasters between long horizontal panels), and a short square centre panel displaying a clock. The chapel features three blocks of painted, grained pews, each with doors. A plain three-sided panelled set fawr is also present. The pulpit platform is curvaceous with turned balusters and quarter-turn stairs on each side, which wrap around the curved end of the balustrade; it is characterised by square panelled newels. The front of the pulpit is solid, featuring a single large shaped panel between pointed panels with quatrefoils, positioned at the level of the balustrade’s bottom rail. The lower half of the pulpit has rebated arched panels. Behind the pulpit, a large plaster arch incorporates fluted pilasters, console capitals, a moulded flat cornice, and a moulded arch with a keystone; an arched panel between the pilasters contains a marble plaque commemorating Rev E.T. Evans, minister from 1920 to 1955. The plaster ceiling features a moulded cornice and a highly ornate rose, the centre of which is a swirling acanthus design in four rings of varying patterns, including roses, acanthus, flower scrolls, and outer acanthus leaves. The lobby has canted sides with two half-glazed double doors and a central window, all featuring 20th-century patterned coloured glass. Patterned coloured glass of a similar style, dated 1957, is also present in the two arched windows on each side of the pulpit. The gallery houses a large, late 19th century organ. Raked panelled pews are present, and a basement hall is located underneath the chapel, supported by five iron columns.
