Description

Cefnfforest-fawr is a farmhouse, likely dating to the 18th century, constructed of rubble stone with imitation slate roofs and end-wall stacks. A 20th-century brick stack is present at the left end, above a large projecting chimney breast, while the right end stack and the stack at the end of the rear wing are rendered. The main block is two stories high with a three-window front, offset to the left. The upper floor has three small four-pane sash windows under the eaves; the central window has a higher sill indicating a former porch location. The ground floor features 20th-century windows on either side, each with stone voussoirs to a cambered head. A cambered-headed doorway is flanked by a gabled porch with a 20th-century door. The left end wall is rendered with a raised chimney breast stepped twice on each side. The right end wall is of rubble stone with a 20th-century window to the ground floor right, and the remains of a former door.

The rear wing incorporates an outshut extending down to align with the right end wall of the main range, along with a door. It features a rendered gable with a four-pane sash stair light and a small understair light. A single 20th-century window is on the first floor to the left. The right side wall is whitewashed and windowless, as is the rear wall of the main house to the right of the wing, with a single 20th-century ground-floor window under a dripstone.

Attached to the rear wing by a short link is an outbuilding with a stone end stack. The upper gable end has external steps leading to a blocked loft door and a ground-floor door, both with timber lintels. Two windows are located on the side wall at ground-floor level, with a loft entry above. The rear of this outbuilding has a lean-to addition with three windows. The roof is partly replaced with metal sheeting, and partly with slate.

Inside, the farmhouse has a central passage with a room on either side, aligned with a broad, lower flight of an enclosed dog-leg staircase set within the rear wing. The staircase features square newels, a thick molded rail, a closed string, and balusters which were originally slim turned, but are now boxed in or removed. The ground floor has six beams to a five-bay layout. The right side kitchen has a deep chimney breast and a small 20th-century fireplace. A beam above the fireplace is exposed within a small inserted room to the left, displaying deep chamfers. The left room contains a 19th-century six-panel door in a molded surround with square blocks at the upper angles, the molding being a flat double ogee. An exposed squared beam with minimal chamfers and a halved beam are on the end wall above a 20th-century fireplace, the halved beam being carried on two small stone corbels. The rear wing has a staircase on the left and a service room to the right, with two unmoulded axial beams and a small fireplace on the end wall. Three curved stone steps lead down to a stone-flagged understair area, separated by a timber-frame partition from the rear service room. The first-floor landing has board doors, with wide floorboards largely removed. Large rooms flank the landing, with a small room between. Fireplaces are blocked. A board door leads from the landing to the roof space of the rear wing, which contains two pegged collar trusses and double purlins. The first-floor front rooms are ceiled at collar level. Five pegged collar trusses are present. The rear outbuilding has a whitewashed interior, with a removed loft floor, and an end-wall fireplace featuring voussoirs on an iron curved band.
