Description
The Lofted Pigsty at Tredegar Fawr is a two-storey structure, likely dating from the 17th century, although it is currently in a dilapidated condition as of January 1976. It features gabled roofs covered with slate, many of which are missing, and there is noticeable plant growth on the building. The front wing has flanking stacks and is clad in pebbledash over stone walls. The front elevation includes two window openings on the first floor, positioned at eaves level, along with one doorway and a window on the ground floor.
Inside, there is a flagstone floor, and the south-west ground floor has a fireplace with an ovolo moulded beam above, flanked by cupboards on the left and a doorway on the right. The rear wing has missing floors. An adjoining wing to the south-west, dating from the 18th to mid-19th century, has lower eaves and ridge and similar wall and roof cladding. The front elevation of this wing features one window opening above, with remnants of a two-light casement with small panes, and on the ground floor, there is a doorway with a ledged door to the left and a window opening with a similar window to the right. Inside this ground floor room, there is a tile floor and wood ceiling joints of thin scantling, with a fireplace on the south-west wall that includes an iron range and a bread oven.
Additionally, there is a dairy at the rear, retaining slate slabs, which is an outshut to the main rear wing of the house. There is a range of stone outbuildings adjoining the farmhouse, dating from the 19th century or earlier, with a slate roof and lower eaves and ridge, along with corrugated cladding on the barn. From the north-east, the front elevation of the first outbuilding features a modern lean-to on the left, with a window opening above at eaves level and a segmental-headed doorway with brick voussoirs below. To the south-west of a wide vehicular passage, there is a continuation of the same range, with the first outbuilding being a former cowhouse that has a segmental-headed window opening above and a ledged door below, along with a blocked doorway now serving as a window on each side. The second outbuilding is a barn that has a large central doorway with a modern wood door and ventilating slits on either side.
