Description
The Tower of the Church of St David and St Cyfelach is a detached church tower dating from the 18th century. It is a square, unbuttressed structure made of thin coursed rubble stone, featuring dressed stone small quoins. Each face of the tower has a very small plain rectangular 2-light louvred bell-opening, along with some tiny openings located lower down—one on each face just above mid-height, and one slightly lower on the north, west, and south faces. The east face includes a low ashlar pointed arch that is unmoulded with raised imposts, which likely led to a former nave, although no other signs of building remain.
The south side has rebuilt walling covering most of the upper third of the tower. The west side does not have a door, while the north side features an inserted door, possibly from the 17th century, which has a flat grey sandstone lintel and chamfered ashlar jambs. This plank door is fitted with wrought iron strap hinges. The lintel is a reused early Christian stone that bears an incised cross approximately 30 inches high, which was already much eroded by the 19th century.
The rebuilt parapet includes a string course below and battlements with flat tops and an outer face that is chamfered. Additionally, there are stone rainwater spouts on the north and south sides. The tower is not accessible.
