Description
The perimeter wall of The Vile open field system is a drystone wall that reaches up to about 2 metres in height. It forms part of the boundary of the Vile open field against the clifftop grazing commons. The wall has an oversailing profile, which is believed to be designed to deter sheep and other animals from grazing on the commons from entering the open field. Along the southern and western sections of the wall, there are many small headland pits that are thought to have been stonepits used for the wall's construction and repair.
The drystone wall begins approximately 10 metres south of a steel ladder on Rhossili Parish Footpath no 12, at grid reference 24167.18746. From there, the southern section of the wall extends west and south in an irregular line to grid reference 24089.18713. The western section continues north and west to grid reference 24057.18769, and the northern section then runs north and east to the corner of a carpark near the old Coastguard Station at grid reference 24119.18799. The wall is nearly continuous, with only a few minor breaches.
The southern part of the wall stands at a height of 1 to 2 metres and retains its characteristic profile, which is battered on both sides and features an upper bulge facing the clifftop commons. The western section is similar but is in better condition. The northern section is in even better repair, although it has lost its characteristic profile in several areas.
