Description

The chapel and remains of the nave of the former friary at Christ College are designed in the Early English style. The chapel is constructed of stone and features angle buttresses, topped with a slate roof that includes a belcote at the west end. The north elevation showcases a total of 11 lancets, with 4 located in the sanctuary and 7 deeper lancets in the choir. The east window consists of 5 stepped lancets. On the south side, there are 4 lancets in the sanctuary, while the remainder of the wall is blank. The remains of the nave include the base of a west window and a tomb recess to the south. Only the responds of the arcade to the 14th-century north aisle remain. The north doorway features quadrant mouldings above a round arch. The west entry to the chapel has a lean-to roof, with a doorway on the right and a 3-light window on the left.

Inside, the chapel boasts a panelled wagon roof and an early 14th-century tomb recess in the north sanctuary wall. There are quadruple sedilia to the south and a double piscina, both adorned with trefoiled arches and hoodmouldings that feature floral stops. The east window contains 19th-century glass from 1863, created by Clayton and Bell to the designs of Seddon. The reredos panelling is by Caroe, while the stalls are by Seddon. The antechapel includes 6 stalls from around 1400, complete with misericords. A large cinquefoil double piscina, believed to have originated from the nave, is also present. The chapel features notable late 17th-century and early 18th-century monuments, including a full-length portrait bust of William Lucy, who died in 1677, and the Lucy/Games tomb with life-size alabaster figures. Additionally, there is a grand 18-branch candelabrum, gifted by Elizabeth Walker of Newton House in 1723.
