Description

Dan-y-Castell is an early 18th-century, two-storey, three-bay house constructed of rubble with a slate roof. The roof has bracketed eaves and a band detail, and is topped by two rubble chimney stacks finished in brick. The front features 16-pane sash windows with glazing bars, each set beneath a labelled lintel. A fine, central 18th-century doorcase is distinguished by a pedimented design with a dentilled cornice and fluted frieze. It incorporates panelled pilasters framing an arched entrance with a recessed six-panel door and an unusual traceried fanlight.

Rubble end walls include casement and sash windows, with roughcast on the left gable. A one-storey and attic rubble extension projects to the left, also with a slate roof, boxed eaves, and a brick-capped chimney stack. A later, projecting dormer with casement windows has been added to this section. A lintel above a half-glazed door is inscribed "circa 1734, Ty Dan-y-Castell, 1934”. A lean-to is attached to the gable end.

A later, two-storey, splayed bay is set at the rear, featuring 12-pane sash windows and French windows. To the left, a lower, two-storey cross range exists, with earlier origins, and includes casement windows, an advanced rubble chimney breast, and a stairwell.

The interior of the cross range preserves feather stop chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and a contemporary fireplace, indicating 16th or 17th-century origins. The earlier house was, in the 17th century, the home of Sir John Herbert.
