Description
Smart's Bridge is a cast-iron bridge built in 1824, spanning 2.9 metres over the rocky bed of the River Clydach. It features a segmental arch with decorative spandrels that display repeated lancets, with the date 1824 inscribed on the crown of the arch on both sides. The surface of the carriageway is iron-plated and grooved for rails, with transverse grips on either side of the grooves. The bridge is supported by rubble piers that are set on the rock. In 1987, simple iron railings were added, designed to resemble the original ones, and these railings are terminated in lengths of rubble walling.
