Description

Laques is an early 19th-century, two-storey building with three windows on the rear, constructed from whitewashed rubble. It features 12-pane sash windows with slightly cambered heads, stone voussoirs, and slate sills throughout. A raised string course runs below the ground floor sills, and cellar openings are just discernible beneath. The rainwater goods have been replaced with uPVC.

On the eastern side, there is a two-window range that shows evidence of a large blocked archway leading to the basement, located near the northeast angle, with stone voussoirs below the string course. The ground floor right and both first-floor openings have 12-pane sashes. The left side of the ground floor has a massive arched opening with stone voussoirs, above which is a large fanlight over paired panelled timber doors, accessed by six concrete steps. There is evidence of later 20th-century alterations here, including narrow modern stone infill flanking the door frame. The roof is hipped to the north, with a small rendered stack between the bays. The northwest wall has a blocked cellar door with stone voussoirs, and the string course is level with the arch spring. This area is blocked in rubble and partly obscured by a later flight of external steps, with a blocked window above.

A connected single-storey range to the northwest has been much altered, with uPVC rainwater goods and all openings, as well as a modern imitation slate roof. The oldest part of the house is the southwest end, while the southeast end was likely added in the later 18th century. It is said to contain a good dog-leg staircase from around 1703 that runs the full height of the house, featuring twisted balusters and a closed string. There is also mention of good quality stucco and at least one quality 18th-century timber fireplace. The ground floor room to the southeast has a massive fireplace and rough-hewn ceiling beams. The first-floor room in the western range has large fielded panels and a deeply moulded stucco cornice, all well-restored. The plasterwork in the northern and eastern portions is of minimal character. Additionally, there are two small barrel-vaulted cellars beneath the eastern range.
