Description

5 High Street is a house that forms part of an informal terrace, built in the 19th century. It has three bays and stands three storeys tall. The roof is slate with a gabled design, featuring close eaves and no chimneys. The facade is painted stucco with long and short quoins on both sides and a raised plinth. The sash windows are hornless and have shouldered and heeled raised stucco surrounds with vermiculated keys: the second floor has 9-pane sashes, the first floor has 12-pane sashes, and the left side of the ground floor also has a 12-pane sash.

There is a central arched doorway with the original 6-panel door and a fanlight above. The door features four fielded panels with rebated corners, while the fanlight has Gothic interlacing glazing bars. To the right of the ground floor, there is a large plain rectangular opening with two columns on bases matching the height of the original plinth, and the shopfront is set back. The 20th-century neo-Georgian shop front includes a central door with an overlight that echoes the fanlight of the house, flanked by fixed small-paned shop windows with top lights.

At the rear, the building is rendered, with an outshut projecting to the right. The first floor on the left features early 20th-century cross-windows. Inside, there are some surviving features, including a few panelled doors, panelled shutters, and some panelled cupboards, although the fireplaces have been removed. The door surrounds are moulded with corner rosettes, and the staircase has stick balusters and turned newels, with the balusters renewed and a thin curved stair rail.
