Description
Pistyll Limekilns is an unusual structure featuring two pairs of limekilns facing each other, with two located to the north and two to the south, approximately 5 meters apart. A full-width bridge connects them at a height of about 9 meters. The limekilns are built from axe-dressed limestone masonry and have brick arches over the working areas. The entire structure measures around 25 meters square.
At the lower level, a railway siding entered the space beneath the bridge on the west side. The kiln working areas and platforms are situated about 2 meters above the former railway siding level, accessible by four narrow concrete staircases. Remains of a structure that once covered the siding can be found at the west, extending from the kiln structure.
The arches over the working areas are semicircular, spanning about 3 meters. Two of the draw-holes are arched, while the others feature lintels. The south-west kiln includes an additional working arch on its west face, which has two corbelled-over drawholes and a brick pier in between. There are also two blind, recessed drawholes on the south face overlooking the siding.
At the top level, a raised causeway, which was part of the former tramway, crosses the structure from north to south, linking it to a nearby limestone quarry and extending via an embankment to a silica quarry located 400 meters to the south-east. One kiln opening, measuring about 4 meters in diameter, is visible but in a collapsed condition.
