Description

Capel Libanus is a Baptist chapel built from rubble stone and topped with a slate roof featuring overhanging plain verges. The gable facade includes two small high-level arched windows and an arched central door, all adorned with stone voussoirs. The windows are small-paned with intersecting glazing bars at the heads, and the door has a similar glazing design in its fanlight. The entrance features double flush-panelled doors. The north side wall is windowless and has flat boarded eaves. The rear gable boasts two large arched windows, also with stone voussoirs, which are two-light windows with a broad mullion and Y-tracery heads. These windows have small-paned lights with Y-tracery at the arch heads. The south side, facing the road, has a late 19th-century added lean-to vestry and schoolroom, accessed by 11 steps leading to a door at the eastern end. This side also features three upper windows with four panes each, a central door on the ground floor, and two small four-pane casements, all with brick surrounds.

Inside, the chapel has a fine interior with a three-sided gallery supported by two sets of two columns. The gallery features vertical panels painted over a simple cornice with curved angles. There is attractive late 19th or early 20th-century stencil decoration on the columns, cornice, and panels. The seating includes three blocks of painted panelled box pews, with larger family pews located at the front center and inward-facing pews on either side of the pulpit. The pulpit and great seat, both from the late 19th century, are made of pitch pine. The lobby contains two six-panel doors and a square twelve-pane window in between. The ceiling, also from the late 19th century, is boarded and features embossed paper in panels.
