Description
Cornwallis Flats are former almshouses that have been converted into flats. The building features 20th-century dry-dash cladding, which replaced the original roughcast, and has hipped slate roofs adorned with modillion cornices and rendered chimneys. It is two storeys high and has an H-plan layout, consisting of two five-window ranges facing south and north, connected by a short parallel-roofed hipped block with long lean-tos on the east and west sides. Each range includes four chimneys on the rear wall.
Most of the detailing is from the 20th century, mimicking the original style, including 12-pane horned sash windows with concrete sills. Each range originally had a single central front door featuring a radiating-bar fanlight and a panelled door; however, there were originally three such doors, with the outer ones on the south front now blocked and the north front door unrecorded. There is a one-window range on each end wall, and the long lean-to roofs between the end walls have 20th-century mirror-paired doors and windows.
The building is said to have undergone significant alterations during its conversion, but the rear range retains a central passage with a hall arch and stairs off the right end, which appear to be original features.
