Description
The Caersalem Baptist Chapel, together with its schoolroom and forecourt railings, was built in 1893. It is constructed of brown snecked rubble with Bath stone ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The chapel is in an Italianate Classical style and is two storeys high, with a three-window front and sides. The northeast-facing facade features superimposed orders of Tuscan pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment. The cornice is inscribed "Caersalem Baptist Chapel," and the pediment contains a keyed roundel vent inscribed "Built 1893." The windows are arched and set within ashlar surrounds, incorporating imposts and keystones. The central windows are paired with a roundel placed beneath the overall arch. All windows have timber frames with two lights and roundels in their heads. The ground floor includes a broad ashlar cornice and a substantial Tuscan ashlar porch with a pedimented and corniced front, featuring two columns and pilaster responds. An arched doorway with a large fanlight and five-panel double doors is situated within the porch. The pediment and side eaves are formed of painted moulded timber. The sides of the chapel have three arched windows on each floor, with the ground floor windows being shorter. The rear wall features two similar upper windows, and a keyed roundel within the pediment.
A single-storey schoolroom is attached, gabled to the north and south. It has two arched windows, matching those on the chapel, in each end wall, with a roundel in the gable. The rear wall is rendered and includes a central, shallow gable, with a roundel and two arched windows (lacking ashlar frames). A lean-to porch, facing east, extends from the south wall of the chapel. This porch has a four-panel door and overlight, set within an arched ashlar frame with imposts and a keystone.
The forecourt to the front and south side is enclosed by a low rubble wall and spearhead railings with intersected oval bars, along with matching gates in cast-iron Gothic gatepiers marked "Thomas and Clement, Llanelly.”
Inside the chapel, there are three-sided galleries supported by three by three cast-iron Corinthian columns with a timber cornice. The gallery front features fluted pilasters between sections, topped by a pierced cast iron rail above plain panels. The pulpit has an ornate cast-iron front rail and a Venetian arched wall recess behind it. Long windows on either side of the chapel contain stained glass. A curved arrangement, described as a “set fawr,” is present with pierced iron panels. The boarded ceiling has a coved cornice and a deep central vent roundel. The vents are arranged vertically and incorporate an acanthus leaf band below and a rose above. The ceiling is further divided by straight and diagonal ribs.
