Description
The building is a wooden jetty or pier that is connected to a large walled enclosure surrounding Trinity House. The enclosure walls are made of finely dressed tooled grey limestone, featuring a slight slope or batter and heavy tooled stone copings. These walls enclose a sloping area that includes a storehouse and workmen's housing. On the eastern side, there are two large stone gatepiers made of grey ashlar, which have plinths and corniced caps. The gates, installed in the late 20th century, are broad. The walls have a rounded northeast corner, with the walls ramping up at the northwest and southwest corners.
The pier extends out from the walls and has cross-braced supports, running out to a pier-head at right angles, creating a T-plan overall. Under part of the neck and part of the pier head, there are boarded storerooms with pairs of casement windows. The main supports of the pier head rise to finish as octagonal posts above deck level, and there are steps leading down to the water beneath the pier head.
